Abstract

Measurements of infrared absorption and Raman scattering on crystalline acetanilide, a model system for proteins, are reviewed. A new band, close to the conventional amide-I band, was detected at low temperature. Equilibrium properties and spectroscopy data ruled out an explanation based on conventional assignments. A detailed analysis showed that a soliton model is in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. The fine structure of this band, detected more recently, is discussed. Some possible biological implications are finally mentioned.
