Molecular Biology of Cytomegalovirus Replication

  • Mark Stinski

Infection of the host by cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) can lead to productive infection that can either persist asymptomatically, be accompanied by disease, or become latent. This chapter focuses on the molecular events associated with CMV gene expression and replication. The CMV classification is based on the biological properties of host specificity, length of the replication cycle, and cytopathic effects. These viruses are referred to as betaherpesviruses (Roizman and Batterson, 1985).
