Development and Test of Low Vibration Cryocooler Electronics

Abstract

Closed system linear piston cryocoolers are becoming relied upon to provide reliable, continuous and efficient, low vibration cryogenic cooling for infrared focal plane arrays and optics. A brief synopsis of a Low Vibration Cryocooler Drive Electronics (CDE) from Rockwell is presented along with results of vibration cancellation on two opposed British Aerospace (BAe) 80K coolers. Discussions center on the measured performance of different approaches taken for mitigating vibration. The drive electronics systems performance has met requirements with vibration reductions of over 200:1, achieving less than 0.2 N axial and 0.4 N off axis force (Figure 4 & 6) for a 40W dual compressor drive.
