Demonstration of a High Performance 35 K Pulse Tube Cryocooler

A single-stage pulse tube cooler has been designed and constructed that significantly advances the state-of-the-art of pulse tube cooler efficiency. The cooler produces 1 watt of cooling at 35 K for 200 watts of input power to the compressor at its design point. A head-to-head balanced flexure-bearing design, the compressor operates into a common compression chamber ported to the cold head. The cold head is a design configuration originally pioneered by TRW. The cooler has been packaged for space-flight applications and is being delivered to the Air Force Phillips Laboratory for indefinite life testing. Operation of the cooler is described and thermal performance test data is presented.
