Abstract

In an earlier article (Buck-Morss, 1975) I brought together two previously separate areas of discourse, Piaget’s theory of cognitive development and Adorno’s philosophy of negative dialectics. The essay was an attempt to account for the fact that in the cross-cultural application of Piaget tests, non-Western children score significantly lower than their Western peers, implying that the cognitive development of the former, particularly in Third World countries, is in some way retarded (see Dasen, 1972).
