A Method for Entity Identification

Information systems are those software systems that are characterized as being data-intensive, transaction-oriented, with a substantial element of human-computer interaction (Loucopoulos and Zicari, 1992). Data modeling is a process of understanding the ‘data aspect’ of a domain of interest, for which an information system is developed, so it plays a vital role in the development of information systems. For example, SSADM takes three perspectives in analyzing the ‘current environment’, namely DFD, LDS (Logical Data structure) and Entity life history (Ashworth and Goodland, 1990; Weaver, 1993). SSADM places a great emphasis on data modeling, as Weaver put it, the Logical Data Model ‘is possibly the most important and ultimately the most rigorous product of an entire SSADM project’, and the Logical Data Model ‘is a vehicle for analyzing the logical structure of an organization’s information’ (Weaver, 1993).
