Zinc-Rich Coatings

  • Xiaoge Gregory Zhang

Zinc-rich coatings, which contain zinc dust and a binding medium, have been widely used since the 1930s for the protection of steel structures from corrosion [345, 1159]. They can be used as a primer or as a final coating and can be applied by spray, dip, or brush. As coatings, they possess a number of advantages over galvanized coatings and regular organic paints: they are easier to apply than galvanized coatings, particularly for large or odd-shaped articles, and, unlike regular organic paints, they provide galvanic protection at edges or the places where the paint coating is defective.
