Abstract

Other than childbirth, little so clearly embodies the demarcation of male and female gender roles as warfare. Men go out and fight; women mind the house and kids. Men protect their wives and children; women wait for their husbands and sons to come back, and they welcome or mourn them at battleā€™s end. Whether biological or social factors or both are responsible, the pattern remains, and whatever exceptions may be found only prove the rule.
