Abstract

In addition to individual coping styles, the government and the organization can help the commuter in solving some of the basic problems of getting to work and returning home. This intervention does not have to wait for commuting problems to manifest themselves. It can begin before any commuters have moved into a new area or residential development zone. From the government’s perspective, an appropriate infrastructure is necessary so as to enable the commuter to drive or ride to work in the most efficient fashion. From the organization’s viewpoint, determining the optimal location for an office building or factory must take into consideration traffic patterns, parking spaces, availability of mass transportation, and so forth. Often the accelerated growth of a community or the relationship between a rural and urban region is unforseen, and the problems begin to appear after the infrastructure is already extant; nevertheless, even under such circumstances the government and organization can still do much to alleviate potential sources of stress and the ensuing negative consequences. The major techniques described in the chapter can be found in Table 8.1.
