Evolution of the Vacuum Rabi Splitting Into a Single Peak for a Bistable Optical Cavity

Abstract

One of the most powerful spectroscopic methods available is the study of the transmission of a medium as the excitation frequency varies. The results give direct information on the energy structure of the sample and its dynamics. We have investigated the transmission characteristics of a quantum optical system formed by a collection of twolevel atoms coupled to a single mode of a high finesse cavity. The present work explores the evolution of the transmitted spectrum as the intensity of the driving field varies. The system is intrinsically sensitive to the intensity of the driving field since it is the realization of the canonical model for optical bistability [1].
