Transient Inversionless Amplification in Rubidium Atoms by Laser Frequency-Switching
There has been a lot of interest in lasing and amplification without population inversion in multi-level atomic systems in transient region1 and in coherently driven two-level atoms in steady-state region.2 In this paper, we report a new technique to observe transient amplification without population inversion due to free-induction decay and optical nutation3 by current-switching of the diode-laser frequency in inhomogeneously-broadened two-level Rb atoms.
