Characteristics of Asexual Reproduction in the Sea Anemone, Haliplanella Luciae (Verrill), Reared in the Laboratory

  • Chapter

Abstract

Longitudinal fission and pedal laceration are the most common asexual reproductive modes employed by sea anemones. In longitudinal fission, the sea anemone stretches transversely to generate two fragments of similar size. Tissue tears along a longitudinal plane parallel, and usually close to the oral-aboral axis (Torrey and Mery, 1904; Davis, 1919). In pedal laceration, many small tissue fragments separate from the pedal disk and regenerate into new individuals (Cary, 1911; Atoda, 1973).
