The term behavioral medicine first appeared in the title of Lee Birk’s 1973 edited book Biofeedback: Behavioral Medicine. Since that time a tremendous amount of attention has been directed to this rapidly emerging field, which now goes well beyond the original emphasis on biofeedback. Despite its relatively short history as a recognized field, behavioral medicine already has had a major impact upon the conceptualization and treatment of illness and in the promotion of health behavior.
