As noted in previous chapters, after World War II, clinical psychologists went beyond individual psychological assessment to engage in intervention. Research on clinical interventions, in contrast to that on mental testing, more often obeys the canons of experimental work. The emergence of controlled treatment research therefore conferred greater scientific respectability on the field of clinical psychology at the same time that it expanded its professional scope.
