Drawing in Nursery School

Part of the Topics in Contemporary Semiotics book series (TICSE)

Piaget’s general semiotic theory of mental development, his special theory of the development of symbolic (iconic) representation by images, and his detailed account on the development of children’s drawings give a comprehensive framework to the present study. There are, however, some other specific aspects of the graphic activity of children that I would like to present in the fourth leg of the journey. These aspects are important because I have so far given little detail on the production end of the sign process involved in children’s drawings. But without maturation of the peripheral muscular apparatus involved in drawing and its coordination with perception, the mental image could not be expressed on paper.
