Automated Radiochemistry Through Transducers: Light from the Far Side

Abstract

In automated syntheses of radiopharmaceuticals labelled with 18F, 11C, 13N and 15O, compact sensors or transducers can be used as part of a process control system to provide feedback to the control unit (Link et al). Many commercially available sensors such as radiation detectors based on small volume geiger tubes, scintillation or semiconductor detectors are considered to be either too large or too expensive. Therefore a number of simple, efficient, and reliable sensors have been developed over the last few years. The description and use of these devices in fully automating chemical synthesis of [18F]—Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and [18F]-Fluorodopa (FDOPA) are presented as examples.
