Regulation of the Rat Estrous Cycle by Predator Odors: Role of the Vomeronasal Organ

The behavior of prey can be changed dramatically by the presence of predator odors (Stoddart, 1976; Dickman and Doncaster, 1984; Gorman, 1984). Small mammals tend to avoid predator odors. Faeces, urine or secretions from some predators are effective in reducing feeding damage by snowshoe hares, black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) and voles (Microtus montanus and M. pennsylvanicus; Sullivan, Grump and Sullivan., 1988; Sullivan, 1985, 1986). 2,2-Dimethylthietane from mink (Mustela vison) causes a decrease in food consumption in snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) and rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) (Robinson, 1990).
