Sources of Oestrous Odours in Cattle

Oestrus detection in the absence of a bull is relatively poor and averages 40% in Britain (Milk Marketing Board, 1986), but 95–100% of oestrous cows running with bulls in small herds are recognised and mounted (Blockley, 1976). Some bulls have also been shown to identify pro-oestrous cows (Kerruish, 1955; Reinhardt, 1983; Stevens, 1983; MAFF, 1984). The breeding efficiency of cattle in commercial situations will therefore increase if improved oestrus detection methods are developed.
