The Trigeminal Nerve System and its Interaction with Olfactory and Taste Systems in Fishes

Abstract

The trigeminal nerve of the Vertebrata is the most sensitive nerve in the head region. As in the case of higher vertebrates, this nerve is well developed in fishes and is represented by three branches — the nervus maxillaris, the nervus mandibularis, and the nervus ophthalmicus superficialis. In contrast to terrestrial Vertebrata, little study has been made of the structure and function of the trigeminal nerve in fishes. Its wide-spread development in fishes suggests it has substantial sensory capacities and important biological functions.
