The Accessory Olfactory System: Role in Maintenance of Chemoinvestigatory Behavior

In mammals, the critical role of the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and the accessory olfactory system (AOS) in mediating neuroendocrine responses to chemical signals has now been demonstrated (e.g., Bellringer et al., 1980; Kaneko et al., 1980; Reynolds and Keverne, 1979; Wysocki and Katz, submitted). Behavioral responses are also altered when input to the AOS is disrupted in studies of maternal responsiveness (Fleming et al., 1979; Marques, 1979), male sexual behavior (Powers and Winans, 1975; Winans and Powers, 1977; Meredith et al., 1980) and ultrasonic vocalizations (Wysocki et al., in press). The hypothesis for a central role for the AOS in mammalian reproductive behavior has been substantiated (see Wysocki, 1979).
