Abstract

A x-ray absorption (XA) study of the local structure of intercalated ICl molecules in graphite is reported. The near-edge (NEXAFS) as well as the extended XA fine structure (EXAFS) measured on the Cl-K and I-LI, III thresholds contain informations on the chemical form of the intercalated molecules and on their relative positions. We observed a significant increase of the intramolecular I-Cl bondlength and we propose an improved model for the intercalate structure.
