Abstract
Meristems are small regions of undifferentiated, dividing cells located at the tips of roots and shoots. Shoot and root apical meristems are formed in the embryo and upon germination give rise to all the above and below ground structures of the plant respectively. Not only do these apical meristems themselves generate plant organs such as leaves, flowers, stems and roots but they typically also generate additional, or lateral, meristems.
