Abstract
Contemporary work examining legal issues of violence toward children tends to focus on two basic questions. First, when is it appropriate for the state to intervene in situations of child maltreatment? And second, when the state does intervene, how should it respond to these cases? This chapter will review these two questions, presenting a variety of viewpoints, and, when possible, discussing empirical findings regarding the role of the legal system in cases of child physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse.
