Synthesis of Esters

Abstract

Of all the carboxylic acid derivatives accessible by carbonylation chemistry, esters have been perhaps the most widely investigated. This has been for reasons of experimental convenience (the reactant alcohol can often be used as solvent), and because the ester linkage is sufficiently stable to withstand isolation and purification procedures, yet sufficiently reactive to make esters valuable intermediates for further synthetic transformation.
