Brain Tolerance in Dogs to Boron Neutron Capture Therapy with Borocaptate Sodium (BSH) or Boronophenylalanine (BPA)

  • Chapter

Abstract

Research programs investigating the potential use of BNCT for brain tumors have been initiated in Europe and in the U.S. using epithermal neutron beams and either borocaptate sodium (BSH) or boronophenylalanine (BPA) as boron compounds. The BSH biodistribution and pharmacokinetics have been studied in patients with malignant gliomas in Japan1, Germany2, Switzerland3 and Austria4. Elevated boron concentrations were found in tumor tissue whereas normal brain tissue has shown no significant uptake. The BPA biodistribution and pharmacokinetics in patients with malignant glioma have been studied in the USA5 and Australia6 showing varying tumor uptakes and normal brain concentration’s equal to the blood boron levels.
