Non-Linear Regression between Track Density and 10B Concentration in Photo-Electronic Neutron Capture Radiography

Neutron Capture Radiography (NCR) aims at imaging the 10B biodistribution in a slice of an organ or a tumor. In this paper, we would like to describe a method to get very bright and sharp images with the translucent CR 39 detector used as a light guide, and a photo-electronic method to get the local track density. The assumption of proportionality between track density and 10B concentration in the sample is revised to take into account of the track overlap which may lead to mistake as high as 50% in the concentration evaluation. Based on a binomial statistic law the following function has been derived to prevent this effect:

Where δ is the track density, BGN the background noise, e the detector efficiency, 1/N the probability to hit a site on the detector surface, a the factor of proportionality of the particles which hit the detector surface, and [10B] the boron-10 concentration in the sample.
