Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Boron Uptake in Excised Samples of Human Rheumatoid Synovium
Use of the 10B(n,α)7Li nuclear reaction to treat rheumatoid arthritis is currently under investigation at MIT1. This paper will describe experimental studies which demonstrate that very large concentrations of 10B are readily taken up by joint tissues, in vitro. Boron concentrations 5 – 25 times larger than those typically observed in BNCT research are easily obtained. The requirements for further experimental work are described. Also discussed are the potential advantages of treating rheumatoid arthritis via the neutron capture reaction, including the requirement for substantially smaller neutron flux and the correspondingly smaller healthy tissue dose.
