Campylobacter/Helicobacter Bacteraemia in Cape Town, South Africa, 1977–1995
Campylobacter spp. are firmly established as causative agents of gastroenteritis in man, particularly in children under the age of two years. Campylobacter spp. have also been implicated in bacteraemia in young children2,3,7. Just beginning to be appreciated is the role of Helicobacter spp. in gastroenteritis and bacteraemia. Other than a few reports on a limited number of strains, there is little information on C/H bacteraemia in paediatric patients. This present study contributes microbiological and epidemiological findings on bacteraemia in children and adults in an African setting.
