Sub-Typing of Porcine and Human Campylobacter spp. Using RAPD

Reported cases of food poisoning in Northern Ireland (NI) virtually doubled between 1989 and 1993 and over the same period Campylobacter spp. became the principal cause of gastro-enteritis, replacing Salmonella 1. However whilst typing methods for Salmonella are well developed, and readily available as an epidemiological tool, this situation has yet to arise for the typing of campylobacters. Thus whilst campylobacteriosis is considered to be a food-borne infection mainly caused by products of animal origin, it is difficult to define which sources are predominantly responsible for human infection.
