Utilization of Amino Acids by Campylobacter jejuni

Although there have been many investigations of the utilization of specific basic nutrients and growth conditions by Campylobacter sp.6,7,3,2, fundamental aspects of the metabolism of these microaerophilic bacteria remain unknown. Since Campylobacter sp. do not appear to ferment carbohydrates but use amino acids as energy sources9, it was important to investigate what amino acids are used preferentially by the bacterium, and the pathways of their catabolism. Growth culture techniques, amino acid analyses and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were applied to study the utilization of amino acids by Campylobacter jejuni, and to establish the metabolic fates of some of these basic growth factors. Comparison of the biochemistry of different microaerophiles will serve to outline the basic characteristics of this group of organisms. In the case of pathogens such as campylobacters and helicobacters, understanding of their physiology will contribute to the identification of targets for therapeutic intervention.
