Pathogenicity in campylobacters remains poorly defined, especially at the genetic level, where few genes encoding virulence factors have been characterised. The role toxins play in campylobacter pathogenesis is equivocal but some strains of Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli are haemolytic on blood plates and in contact assays. This haemolytic activity may play a role in pathogenesis as it does for many other species.
