Therapeutic Potential of Neurotrophic Factors: The Role of Ciliary Neurotrophic Factor in Promoting Neuronal Survival and Recovery Following Neuronal Injury

Abstract

Neurotrophic factors are naturally occurring proteins that promote the survival and functional activities of nerve cells.1 Traditionally, neurotrophic factors were found in the target cell to which an innervating nerve cell connects. Such target-derived neurotrophic factors regulate the number of contacts formed between the innervating nerve cells and the target cell population.’ Since the innervating nerve cells are dependent for their survival on the target-derived neurotrophic factor and since their access to the factor is limited, the levels of available factor influence both the survival of nerve cells and the development of synaptic connections.2
