An Overview of Receptors of MPS Cells

  • Chapter

Part of the Blood Cell Biochemistry book series (BLBI,volume 5)

Abstract

Plasma membrane receptors link macrophages with their external environment and modulate macrophage activities such as growth, differentiation, activation, migration, adhesion, recognition, endocytosis, and secretion. They may act to anchor the macrophage in a specific anatomical location, to transduce a signal, or to enable extracellular cells and particles to be submitted to intracellular processing. These receptors therefore play important roles in a range of physiological and pathological processes including host defense, inflammation, and repair. The ability of the macrophage to respond to a variety of conditions and stimuli depends on its ability to express a large repertoire of receptors.
