Abstract
Dental composites have essentially replaced silicate cements as the preferred esthetic restorative material. Although dental composites exist in a variety of formulations, they all contain the following essential components: 1) a resin system usually comprising one or more monomers, 2) a reinforcing phase consisting of glass, quartz or other filler, 3) a coupling agent such as a vinyl silane for chemically bonding the reinforcing mineral phase with the polymeric matrix, 4) an initiator system for free radical polymerization under ambient conditions, and 5) stabilizers for maximizing the storage stability of the uncured dental materials and the chemical stability of the cured composites. Optionally, such ancillary components as anticariogenic fluoride release agents and coupling agents for promoting adhesion to tooth structure may also be included. Dental sealants have similar compositions except that they are unfilled or only lightly filled materials.
