Abstract
Prevention and control of alcohol problems have received increasing attention from the scientific and professional communities in recent years, especially in the United States. Beginning with the initial report of the Cooperative Commission on the Study of Alcoholism (Plaut, 1967), and followed by the Commission’s report on prevention (Wilkinson, 1970), this trend has continued and accelerated since the establishment of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) in 1971. Education has been advanced as a major tool of prevention in the United States, although in other countries education may assume a less prominent role. In this chapter, attention is directed to (1) a description and discussion of major models of prevention; (2) an account of the principal techniques of prevention; (3) detailed discussion of alcohol education as a critical technique of prevention; and (4) an analysis of some key issues in preventive and educational action.
