Use of Mycoparasites for Biological Control of Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum in the Glasshouse

Abstract

At this Institute over the last 6 years Coniothyrium minitans and Trichoderma isolates have been tested for ability to control Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on glasshouse lettuce and celery. Initially, a wheat grain preparation of C. minitans was incorporated into soil containing sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum before planting each of three consecutive lettuce crops. This treatment gave 85% disease reduction or greater when 30-50% disease was present in control plots, comparable with fortnightly sprays of Ronilan (vinclozolin) (Lynch and Ebben, 1986).
