Abstract

A simple cellular electrophysiological model is that shown in Fig. 4.1. Here the cell membrane separates space into an extracellular and intracellular region. Both regions may be idealized as passive and uniformly conducting (though with different conductivities). If an adequate stimulating current is passed through a pair of electrodes at the surface of the cell, then an action potential (to be described shortly) is elicited. The action potential will propagate to all parts of the cell.
