Therapeutic Adherence

  • Chapter
Behavioral Pediatrics

Abstract

It is our intent in this chapter to examine the problem of therapeutic nonadherence in pediatrics. Research with adult populations will only be considered in the absence of illustrative examples from the pediatric literature. We will discuss methodological issues including definitional and measurement difficulties that have hampered progress in developing effective solutions for nonadherence. The research that has attempted to identify the causes of nonadherence and treatments for nonadherence will also be reviewed. The remainder of the chapter will focus on a review by disease entity of the pediatric research in the area that is noteworthy for innovation and/or objectivity in its approach to the assessment and treatment of nonadherence. We have chosen to review the majority of pediatric research by disease entity for the sake of convenience and to identify and integrate with medical management of the disease the salient variables from an applied behavior analysis perspective relevant to assessing and treating nonadherence. Finally we offer some guidelines for future inquiries in this important area of behavioral pediatrics research.
