Part of the book series: Issues in Clinical Child Psychology ((ICCP))

Abstract

Virtually all children and parents have experience with common childhood afflictions such as viral infections, stomachaches, headaches, and minor injuries. Unfortunately, many children and their families encounter more threatening forms of acute and chronic childhood illness and injury. By age 18, approximately 10–31% of children and adolescents experience one or more chronic medical conditions (Hobbs & Perrin, 1985; Newachek, Stoddard, & McManus, 1993; Pless & Douglas, 1972). Based on national survey data, it has been estimated that childhood chronic illnesses result in 35 million bed days and 40 million school absences annually (Newachek & Taylor, 1992).
