Abstract
This book aims to give an overarching view of human breathing, drawing upon a wide range of disciplines relevant to both normal and abnormal breathing. Because the specially written articles cover such a wide range and make new connections between disciplines, the Introduction concentrates on locating the chapters within an explanatory framework. Basic concepts and approaches contained in the chapters are introduced, key issues are highlighted, and certain themes are connected with current thinking in the psychophysiology of breathing. The book as a whole is structured so that the chapters progress from the basic anatomy and physiology of breathing and the discussion of some organic disorders (Part I), to behavioral, psychological and therapeutic aspects (Parts II and III). The reader will find that some of the chapters overlap and cross these broad headings, since analysis and diagnosis are not always separable from discussion of treatment.
