Abstract
During the 1980s, there was a perceived need to define more clearly the rights of people receiving behavioral treatment. This need arose from abundant controversies involving the courts, legislatures, professional groups, and advocacy organizations. In response to this need, the Association for Behavior Analysis (ABA) commissioned a task force to examine issues concerning people’s right to effective treatment. The final report was accepted by the executive council of ABA at its October 1987 meeting. An abbreviated version of the task force report subsequently was overwhelmingly endorsed as a position statement by the voting members of ABA and became official ABA policy. A copy of the final task force report, and the position statement endorsed by the ABA membership, are included in Appendices A and B.
