Abstract
The methanogens represent a major group of the archaea. A common feature of these otherwise diverse organisms is the production of methane. The cell wall profiles are also heterogeneous (Kandler and König, 1985). The common eubacterial cell wall polymer, the murein, is not found. Here we give a brief overview of the structure and biosynthetic pathways of three different methanobacterial cell wall polymers: a peptidoglycan (pseudomurein), a heteropolysaccharide (methanochondroitin) and a surface glycoprotein.
