Peptidoglycan Synthesis During Hyphal Elongation in Streptomyces antibioticus
The streptomycetes are gram-positive bacteria with a complex and specialized cycle of cellular differentiation. Initially, the spores germinate forming multinuclear hyphae which branch repeatedly, originating a substrate mycelium that penetrates into the medium. Later, the colony differentiates and forms a “reproductive” aerial mycelium that grows into the air and sporulates.
