Recent Advances in Variable Valve Timing

The application of variable valve timing (VVT) to spark ignition engines is reviewed. In addition to higher performance, there are opportunities to improve the ECE-15 vehicle fuel economy by up to 15%. Added friction from the VVT system itself could however significantly depreciate the potential benefit. A selected number of VVT concepts developed by Ford are described.
