Laser — Molecule Interactions at High Intensities

When Rhodes and co-workers1 investigated the multiphoton ionisation (MPI) of Xe using an ArF excimer laser, their results posed a question concerning the process of laser-induced multiple ionisation. Specifically, was the interaction adequately described by a single-electron (sequential) model or was a collective (direct) mechanism required? The Chicago results at that time appeared to point towards a collective picture, whereas the careful work of the Saclay group2 using a frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser strongly suggested that, at the higher intensities, a sequential process was more appropriate.
