Abstract
Above-threshold ionization (ATI) is a phenomenon observed in multiphoton ionization experiments in intense laser fields. This process is characterized by a large number of evenly spaced peaks in the photoelectron energy spectrum. These peaks correspond to the absorption of n o+s photons by an atom which requires only n o photons to ionize. This is a special feature of ATI distinct from other multiphoton ionization processes, i.e., there are a significant number of radiative transitions between continuum states of the atom.
