Blastomycosis

  • Chapter

Abstract

Originally described in 1894 by Gilchrist [1], blastomycosis is an important pyogranulomatous systemic mycosis caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis. In his initial description, Gilchrist categorized the organism as a protozoan, but later recognized the organism as a fungus. Although it is now understood that most cases of blastomycosis result from inhalation of infectious spores, early cases were perceived to be a primary dermatologic disorder. It was not until the early 1950s that the concept of primary pulmonary blastomycosis with secondary dissemination to extrapulmonary sites was adopted, largely based on the clinical and pathologic observations of Schwartz and Baum [2].
