The Macrophage and Atherosclerotic Process

Abstract

Data from pathologic studies and clinical trials over the past decade have led to a reassessment of the pathogenesis and treatment of atherosclerotic disease. Thrombolytic therapy, first employed in the late 1980s, has been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of acute coronary syndromes. Angiography performed at the time of acute myocardial infarction demonstrated that culprit lesions were frequently only mild to moderate stenoses, not high-grade lesions that nearly obstructed the coronary arteries Finally, arteriographic regression trials that used lipid interventions to lower LDL-cholesterol frequently demonstrated only mild changes in the stenotic lesions that had been identified at the baseline catheterization, but a consistent reduction in clinical events has been observed for participants in these trials [1–3].
