Abstract

The current state of yeast systematics is somewhat different from that in most filamentous fungi. We have had the benefit of having undertaken DNA reassociation studies for over 20 years and correlating these data with genetic definitions of species. The species concept in yeasts is thus now approaching that of a biological one. Further, if we have a certain amount of DNA relatedness we can now be confident we can define a species. The species concept is not a major problem in yeasts, but definition of genera can cause difficulties.
