Summary
Perplexities related to the systematics of Eupyrenomycetes are due to the relatively few taxa that have been studied, and the many fewer taxa that have been investigated in depth. Moreover, the apparent great age of the ascomycetes, the general scarcity of fossil records, and the supposition that early genera have not survived to the present, accentuate problems associated with developing a natural (phylogenetic) classification. Two specific problem areas of eupyrenomycete systematics discussed are: the interfaces among Eupyrenomycetes and Loculoascomycetes; and selected examples of problem interfaces among eupyrenomycete families and genera. In the latter problem area the following topics are considered: generic relationships in Xylariaceae; relationships between Xylariaceae and Diatrypaceae; relationships between Calosphaeriaceae and some other families; the status of Boliniaceae; the status of Coniochaetaceae; Ceratocystis and Ophiostoma; interfaces between Amphisphaeriaceae and Xylariaceae; problems in taxa of Diaporthales; the status of Cainiaceae; and parallel versus convergent evolution among Eupyrenomycetes.
